The European Rail Traffic Management System, ERTMS, is introduced as a common signalling system for the European railway network. ERTMS consist of two main parts, the signalling part ETCS and the radio transmission system GSM-R, based on the well-established GSM standard. About Us ERTMS is an abbreviation of European Rail Traffic Management System. ERTMS consists of ETCS (European Train Control System), a radio-based communication system for rail (presently GSM-R) and ETML (European Traffic Management Layer, providing information about the location of trains on the network).

The European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is a major industrial project developed by eight UNIFE members - Alstom Transport, AZD Praha, Bombardier Transportation, CAF, Hitachi Rail STS, Mermec, Siemens Mobility and Thales - in close cooperation with the European Union, railway stakeholders and the GSM-R industry. The European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is a single European signalling and speed control system that ensures interoperability of the national railway systems, reducing the purchasing and maintenance costs of the signalling systems as well as increasing the speed of trains, the capacity of infrastructure and the level of safety in rail transport. Before the ERTMS was conceived, almost every single country used to have its own Automatic Train Protection System (ATP). Normally these systems were not compatible with each other and thus crossing a signalling area border meant that trains needed to implement several on-board ATP devices, each of which was self-functioning.
